YORKSHIRE DAY CONCERT

The bands recent Yorkshire Day concert attracted an audience of over 80 people to the Memorial Hall in Pickering. We managed to get them all seated after scouring all the upstairs rooms for more chairs.
The theme for the evening was Yorkshire music – place names, TV themes & compositions by Yorkshire composers - some only having a very tenuous link to God’s Own County. The Ladies provided everyone with veritable feast of Yorkshire Fayre at half time.
Our guests the Malton & District Male Voice Choir joined with the band in the hymn tune Helmsley & also sang items such as My Gals a Yorkshire Gal, The Last Of The Summer Wine & other favourites with great gusto.
The band included the Open All Hours theme, Heartbeat, Scarborough Fair, A Grand Day Out from Wallace & Grommit ( Wensleydale) & the Archers theme from the radio programme (Barwick Green). The hymn tune Farndale composed by the late Harold Dobson was well played by the band. Beethoven’s Yorcksher Marche may have surprised a few & although it went down very well perhaps it is best just to think of him as an honorary Yorkshireman.
The finale by band, choir & audience was the ‘Yorkshire Anthem’ Ilkley Moor. There was many a shout of ‘Where they’ve all got spots on’ etc, which brought the evening to a riotous conclusion.
