MUSIC FOR A SUMMERS EVENING

Post date: Sep 10, 2014 8:59:02 PM

A good audience came along on Saturday 23rd August and enjoyed an evening of summer music played by band, in conjunction with Rachel Anderson and John Wardell from the Kirk Theatre accompanied by pianist Maureen Mercer.
The evening got off to a rousing start with the Zurich March, and the first half included Strawberry Fair, Stranger on the shore, Summer Nights from Grease and finished with Teddy Bears Picnic. John Wardell sang songs including ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ and ‘Cavatina’ – from The Deer Hunter. Rachel’s songs included ‘Summertime’ and ‘I could have danced all night’.
There was a raffle during the interval and then the final session began with Mozart’s ‘Eine Kleine Nacht Music’ which had been arranged by conductor Mike Breckon, and also included the theme from the TV programme Groundforce, Scarborough Fair and British Sea Songs.
The final piece was entitled ‘Evening Hymn and Last Post’ remembering those who fought in the war 100 years ago.
Mike Breckon introduced the pieces to the audience with useful background information on composers and reasons for including each in the programme of summer music. Despite the inclement weather the evening was enjoyed by all.
